Tobias was the former West Coast Videographer for PopStar! Magazine Online, covering talent from 5th Harmony to Cody Simpson. 2015 marked the completion of Tobias’ first feature length documentary: Black Velvet, which explores the life of one African American LGBTQ singer T-Boy as he struggles to survive in New York.
Black Velvet – The Movie
I sought to tell a fly-on-the-wall story of the New York underground drag and trans culture, but discovered a story of acceptance and struggle told through the eyes of the films’ main character T-Boy. Through the journey T-Boy reconnects with his estranged family, faces demons and shame from his pre “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” stent in the United States Navy, and eventually finds acceptance and fans in Germany. The film asks questions that I hadn’t been willing to face myself. Does being gay today still ruin your career? Is there refuge for gay artists? At the core of Black Velvet is a narrative about hope and struggle told through the eyes of an artist.
Tobias in currently in-development on a comedy-drama mini-series. We are seeking distribution for on-demand platforms.
